Affleck Castle is located nine miles northeast of Dundee, just
to the west of the town of Monikie, in Angus, Tayside (route B978).
It is in almost perfect condition, however, it is not open to the
public.
The 1400's
The earliest records of Affleck in 1501 mention the "castell
and fortalice." The Afflecks were the hereditary arms
bearers to the Earls of Crawford.
This 15th century tower house with its turreted keep has survived
five centuries without repairs, alterations, or additions. Built
of the local red sandstone, Affleck Castle rises four stories and
is crowned by a garret.
The first (ground) floor consists of the castle's cellerage, from
which a stair leads to the great or common hall on the second floor.
This large room has a vaulted ceiling and three large windows, each
of which has a bench in its bay. Unlike other rooms of this type,
the Affleck great hall has no fireplace.
A spiral staircase leads to the third floor, which consists of
the lord's hall, a small cell, and a latrine. Above the lord's hall,
via another spiral stairway (located in the opposite corner from
the stair which leads to the hall from below) is the solarium to
the battlements and cap house.
Today
Affleck Castle is managed at present by the Scottish Development
Department, Bureau of Historic Buildings and Monuments.
